Leopard Gecko

Country of Origin:
Deserts of Southern Central Asia, from the southern parts of Afghanistan, throughout Pakistan, to the northwestern parts of India

Leopard Geckos like Leo are found in Afghanistan, Western India and Pakistan.

They live mainly in arid grasslands and desserts. They are nocturnal animals (they come out at night), sleeping during the day beneath rocks and in burrows.

Unlike other Geckos, the Leopard Geckos have moveable eyelids, they also lack the rounded toe pads that allow other Geckos to climb vertical surfaces. Instead they have tiny claws, this is because they live on the ground.

You may have noticed that Squeaks has quite a fat tail. This is because his food is stored here. He stores his food in his tail and it is absorbed when he is hungry. Unlike, other lizards Leopard Geckos are reluctant to drop their tails as a defence mechanism as they will loose all of their stored food as well.

Squeaks came to us as a rescued pet on 26th November 1997.

He is 10 years old and 16cms long, which is fully-grown.

Squeaks diet consists of Creepy Crawlies, mainly Wax worms, crickets and beetles.

Fortunately Leopard Geckos are not endangered but like many species the illegal pet trade threatens their future as does the loss of their natural habitat. With support like yours we can continue to give refuge to animals like Squeaks and ensure their success in the future. Thank you.

Blue Tongued Skink

Country of Origin:
Australia

They can be found living in woodlands, at the margins of forests in Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea.

They are a typical looking skink with a heavy built broad body with small legs. Their head is blunt, broad and triangular and they have a berry blue tongue.

If threatened blue tongued skinks will stand up on their front legs, puff themselves out and stick out their bright blue tongues, which show up starkly in contract to their pale pink mouths. This is a defence to hopefully scare away any would be predators!

Blue Tongue Skinks are omnivores, meaning they eat both plant and animal matter

Green Anolis

Country of Origin:
southeastern United States and some Caribbean islands

Anolis lizards are only found in the Americas.

There are over 250 species and most – including this one – have long slender bodies and a distinctive display fan underneath their throat.

Both Males and females have these fans and males use them to signal to rivals or potential mates!

These are tree dwelling lizards with expanding toe pads which make them expert climbers!

Bosc Monitor

Country of Origin:
Africa

The Savannah/Bosc's Monitor is the most aggressive member of the monitors in Africa.

Bosc’s Monitors exhibit an unusual defence posture. If they are confronted by a snake or another animal too large to overpower, the lizard may roll onto its back, grasping its hind leg in its mouth. The ring of lizards apparently makes swallowing to much of an effort for a would be predator.

In 1984 alone, over 1,000,000 hides from this species legally entered the United States. It is a sad indictment against humans that they are intent on exterminating a species which helps control crocodiles, venomous snakes, vermin populations and which eats carrion.

Bearded Dragon

Country of Origin:
Australia

These lizards get their name from their spiky beards under their chins.

During mating season the males will puff them up and they will turn jet black or red.

They then nod their heads to bring full attention to their beards. They do this to impress the ladies and also warn off other males.

In the past people used to think their red beards meant they could breath fire – but of course they can’t!!

Thai Water Dragon

Country of Origin:
Asia

As their name implies these beautiful lizards are adapt swimmers.

The “Dragon” part of their name comes from the colourful jaws of the males, thought to be where their fire was kept!

Water Dragons become progressively more vegetarian with age, but they will eat almost anything including, fish, shrimp, chopped meat, chicken, eggs, insects, mice and spiders as well as fruit and vegetables!

Green Iguana

Country of Origin:
Central & South America

Green Iguanas are large arboreal lizards that live high in the tree canopies of Mexico and South America.

Juveniles (youngsters) establish areas lower in the canopies while older mature iguanas reside higher up!

This tree dwelling habitat allows them to bask in the sun, rarely coming down except when females dig burrows in which to lay their eggs.

No matter where they inhabit, they prefer to be around water as they are excellent swimmers and will dive beneath the water to avoid predators!!

Iguanas are placid vegetarians eating leaves and fruit. Sometimes they may have a little carrion or insects but mainly they are herbivoures!

Male Green Iguanas can grow to lengths of 2 meters and weight 8 kgs!

In captivity thety can live for 20 years but most only make 8 years in the wild.

Malon arrived here on 21st March 2007 from the RSPCA Putney who found her in someone’s shed! Because she is rescued we do not know her exact age but we guess she is about 8 years old!

She spends her days with her friend Charlie, sunbathing In their enclosure and coming out to meet people.

Fortunately Green iguana are not endangered but like many species the illegal pet trade threatens their future as does the loss of their natural habitat. With support like yours we can continue to give refuge to animals like Malon and ensure their success in the future. Thank you.
