Yellow Crowned Amazon

Country of Origin:
South America and Panama

This widespread parrot varies a lot in colour. Some have a completely yellow head, while others have just a splash of yellow near the beak.

Yellow-crowned Amazons usually travel in small, noisy flocks and leave their roosts at first light to search for food.

They feed high in tree tops, scattering leftovers on the ground below.

African Grey Parrot

Country of Origin:

These beautiful grey parrots can be easily recognised by their striking red tail feathers.

Our Congo African Grey Parrots

Mukuzi and Koko
Were re-homed to us when they were confiscated by CITES at Heathrow Airport being brought into the country illegally, probably for the illegal pet trade.

Harry and Jacko
Came as unwanted pets.

They come out of their cage every morning but cannot be left on a perch as they scare very easily due to their traumatic past.

Bengal Eagle Owl

Country of Origin:
Asia

Found across Asia, Bengalese Eagle Owls generally grow to about 2 foot in height. They eat small mammals such as rats, mice and medium-sized birds.

Public Flying Displays
Flying uses a lot of energy so owls, like any other bird, only fly when it is necessary - not for fun. They fly to find food, mate or to migrate.

Through winter Ozzie does not fly at all so that he can increase his weight as he uses more energy in cold weather- as do all other mammals including us!

Between Spring and Autumn, Ozzie our Bengalese Eagle Owl is flown twice each day. Read more about Animal Encounter Shows at the London Tropical Zoo

Interesting Facts...
Most owls hunt their prey at night. Bengalese Eagle Owls are an exception. They hunt their prey by day and sleep at night – just like us!

The simple way to tell whether an owl hunts by day or night is by the colour of their eyes. Owls with orange or yellow eyes hunt by day. Owls with blue or brown eyes hunt by night.

Owls cannot move their eyes in their sockets like us, so for them to see around they have to swivel their head. Owls can swivel their heads 180 degrees so they can see directly behind them. They cannot turn a full circle because their heads would fall off!
