Black Tegu

Black Tegu in the London Tropical Zoo

In the wild these beautiful lizards have fox like habits, regularly raiding chicken coops for eggs but they are hunted themselves by humans as they provide a substantial meal!

Like monitors, Tegu’s use their tails as a fat store but if they lose or damage it, it cannot be regenerated.

Females have been known to use their sharp claws to rip into Termite nests and use them as incubators for their own eggs.

They can live for 10-12 years in captivity.
